If you’re anything like us, the end of Vermont’s week-long heat wave has left us with a mixture of relief, exhaustion and for some of us a little lingering crankiness. But, what’s important is that we can now enjoy some relief from the mind-numbing heat and humidity and get our brains back to fully functional. Luckily, at our city retreat boutique bed and breakfast, our rooms are perfectly chilled for our guests to escape the oven outside. A few things a heat wave is good for: 1. If you don’t have access to an air conditioner, it forces you to come up with creative and adventurous ways to stay cool (can anyone say sprinkler dance party or slip and slide race?) 2. It gives you a pass to sweat profusely and give zero f*cks about your appearance 3. You appreciate Vermont’s nudity law much more (who likes sticky clothes anyway?!).

For us, at Made INN Vermont, we had to come up with interesting ideas to keep our guests entertained and cool all day long. Those guests who traveled with Fido to stay at our pet friendly B&B in downtown Burlington had to get even more creative to keep their furry friend exercised and safe during what seemed like a never ending week. Our guests visit Burlington for a variety of reasons and though we like to think it’s because they came across our award winning bed and breakfast and just couldn’t stay away… it’s usually because BEER. So, when we make brewery recommendations for our guests, one that always makes the cut is Foam Brewers . These folks are doling out incredible beers that change with the season and the brewer’s inspiration. Foam is a true delight for beer drinkers like me who don’t enjoy anything overly hoppy or bitter–the sour varietals are (like we said) nothing to be sour about! It doesn’t hurt that their outdoor (pet-friendly) patio puts you just steps from the bike path and waterfront or that they’ve partnered with some local food trucks to dish out budget friendly noms five days a week. Whether you’re looking for a spot to enjoy a drink in the sun or under the stars, listen to local bands play anything from jazz to Dick Dale inspired tunes or meet someone new, Foam has something for everyone!

We were so sad when we heard a few weeks ago that the Colchester Causeway connecting travellers from the mainland to the Lake Champlain Islands would be closed for the season due to massive storm damage. Luckily, the town of Colchester recognized the importance of the causeway for summer outdoor recreation and have partnered with the Vermont Agency of Transportation and the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department to rebuild the path. The history of how the pineapple came to represent hospitality is long and winding, much like the creation of the INN. The pineapple was first introduced to Europeans in the 1400s when Christopher Columbus landed in the Caribbean. He and his sailors explored the area and came across the strange fruit, enjoyed it’s pulpy interior and wrote of its curious nature. Centuries later, the high demand and short supply of the pineapple made it extremely valuable and though it did not travel well on the slow journey across the sea, candied and dried pineapples made their way to the Americas and were traded and sold in confectionery shops. As pineapples became the ‘must-have’ topper to a fruit display, it became tradition for hostesses to proudly display the fruit as a symbol of both their rank and ingenuity in procurement. The pineapple quickly became a symbol of hospitality, a sign that a hostess would spare no expense for her guests.

Lazily shower and dress for the day, grab tickets for a matinee movie at the Roxy followed by lunch at El Cortijo , Penny Cluse or start your drinking early and kill two birds with one stone at the Farmhouse Tap & Grill or Citizen Cider (both serving food and adult refreshments). If you want to keep the good times flowing, visit the numerous Burlington breweries and craft cocktail bars dotting our streets. Looking for the best places to eat in Burlington, VT? Well, we can’t put Burlington’s top small luxury B&B getaway on the top of the list for lunch or dinner (though my daily afternoon soup is pretty divine), but we do rate ourselves as one of Burlington’s best breakfast joints and if our reviews on TripAdvisor have anything to say, our guests agree! Recently, we’ve had a run of vegan guests looking for something more creative than toast and cashew butter and we’ve definitely hit it out of the park. About a month ago, Tim from Vermont Singing Drum showed up at the back door clad in holey Carhartt’s and a three day old 5 o’clock shadow with a drum in hand and a story to tell. After giving him a little sh!t for his authentic Vermont appearance we allowed him to sit in our parlor and take up some valuable time. He quickly made himself comfortable and dove into the story behind the Vermont Singing Drum, which he claims anyone can play and it can never produce a poor note. Tim’s main focus and current passion project is introducing his drums to classrooms throughout Vermont to increase peer to peer engagement, increase sociability and foster creativity. Tim routinely presents the drums to teachers and administrators in hopes that they will jump on board. State sponsored grants are available for teachers if they wish to introduce these drums to their students.

Tim artfully crafts these steel drums by hand in his studio on Howard Street in Burlington. The red building that houses dozens of artists is abuzz with creative energy and his showroom is certainly one of the more eye catching. He left us with a drum and one simple instruction, encourage guests to play. We now start every morning with a singing drum wake up call for breakfast and move the drum from room to room when children stay with us so they can enjoy it’s haunting sound (and keep their parents on their toes!). A few weeks later we ran into Tim while visiting Tabbatha Henry Designs (a porcelain lighting and sculpture studio also located in the Howard Street studio space) and he graciously offered us a second drum to encourage more engagement. As Burlington’s #1 politically-incorrect INNkeeper, I knew immediately the benefits of the drum and it’s meditative qualities in relation to the 437 Hz frequency (the natural frequency of the universe– L O V E). Congratulations, University of Vermont , Champlain College and Saint Michael’s College students! You have worked hard (and we’re sure partied harder) to get to where you are now… just a few weeks until graduation and ::GASP:: the real world. Step into our 1881 haunted historic bed and breakfast in Burlington, VT. We have spent years searching for records on our ghost, Elizabeth, but with no luck. Elizabeth made contact with a guest (and medium) in 2015 to express her dislike for our removal of her parlor wallpaper and while we can’t fault her for the emotional outburst of our redesign we couldn’t very well leave it… wallpaper doesn’t exactly jive with our hip, urban inn. We heard that she appreciated our restoration of the hardwood floors, trim and stairs and if she had told Linda how important the wallpaper was to her, Linda surely would have framed it behind glass. $5 a ticket? Elizabeth hasn’t whispered sweet nothings into guests ears in Room 903 in 2 years, nor has she chased anyone out of the house as of late. Most of the time, Elizabeth makes her way up to the cupola to gaze at the Queen City and dream of sipping an ice cold Heady Topper from The Alchemist. TWO-WHEELED CRUISIN’

As the snow comes down around us come March we feel at the same time thankful for it’s presence (economy booster for Vermont ski resorts) and utterly desperate for it’s disappearance and the emergence of sun, fresh foliage and enjoying the outdoors without a million layers. Built along the shores of Lake Champlain, Burlington, Vermont offers endless opportunities for warm weather fun and exploration. Take a stroll through our historic neighborhoods in the Hill District or along the Church Street Marketplace pedestrian mall where you can grab a seat at a local restaurant and enjoy the people watching. Head down to Burlington Segway® Tours and join a tour of the city or rent a bike from Local Motion and explore it on your own.

The Island Line Trail, also known as the Burlington Bike Path, is perfect for the bike enthusiast or novice. The 13.4 mile trail runs from Burlington’s Oakledge park to the southern tip of South Hero, one of the Lake Champlain Islands. The trail winds its way through parks, neighborhoods and city streets at it’s southern end before joining up with the recently renovated Burlington Bike Path at the waterfront in downtown Burlington. There, the path runs alongside the lake, with beautiful views and the occasional vista with benches to take a rest and have a snack. At the north end of Burlington, affectionately referred to as the NNE or New North End, the path crosses the Winooski river and you’ll find yourself in Colchester.

Don’t give up yet, the best is yet to come. Just 2.5 miles from this point you will emerge from the woods onto the old Island Line railroad bed built in 1901 to serve the local communities. The railroad bed is built on miles of giant hunks of granite offering locals and visitors alike the opportunity to “walk on water”. The granite rail bed stretches just over 3 miles across the lake from Colchester to South Hero giving unparalleled views of the Green Mountains to the east and Adirondack Mountains in New York to the west. To allow recreational boats access from Mallett’s Bay to the open lake, a break in the causeway requires bikers and walkers to hop on a 5 minute ferry ride before continuing their exploration. Once on the other side you can continue on to find places like Snow Farm Vineyard, Allenholm Farm and Hackett’s Orchard or take a dip in the lake across from the Bird House Forest.

Review of Made INN Vermont from a German guest:

I have never written a review of hostelries; I’m very traveled for business, but most accustomed to adequate chain hotels, even if they lack charm. I recently had my first American Bed & Breakfast experience, along with my American partner – he once stayed in another B&B that he described as “quaint, but stuffy.”

Made INN Vermont in Burlington, VT is anything but quaint or stuffy. We spent a weekend there and we’re both still talking about it. I’m German, and in German, a word that would describe Made INN Vermont is “Gemuetlichkeit,” which, I’m told, has no exact English equivalent, but translates to: “a feeling of welcomeness and comfortability.” I think that well describes our experience there.

Innkeeper Linda is an artist, designer, sparkling conversationalist, and she greeted us like old friends and then took us on a tour of the inn. What she’s accomplished with the restoration and renovation of this 1881 Victorian masterpiece of a small mansion is impressive. From the amazing beds, to the hot tub, to the sauna, to the record player in each bedroom, Linda has thought of everything. Icing on the cake is all the fascinating “stuff” she’s decorated the inn with. (My partner joked that it was if the entire GLBTQ community had broken in and redecorated an historic landmark.)

Half of a B&B experience is, of course, breakfast. We’re not normally breakfasters, but Linda’s menu was irresistible and locally procured. I was impressed that Linda and so many others I met during our VT visit are so “farm to table” passionate. The maple-cured bacon and local cheese she served were tastes I will long remember.

I am used to Euro prices for lodgings and am amazed at how reasonable most American hotel prices are. But when I compare what we spent at hotels during our trip, to the cost at Made INN Vermont, and all the amenities you get for the price, this is a bargain and a memory I can heartily recommend!

Das Sahnehäubchen auf dem Kuchen ist alle die faszinierende “Zeug” sie ist dekoriert das Inn. (Mein Partner scherzte, dass es, wenn die gesamte Gemeinschaft GLBTQ gebrochen hatte in renoviert und ein historisches Wahrzeichen.)

Hälfte eines B&B Erfahrung ist natürlich, Frühstück. Wir normalerweise nicht breakfasters, aber Linda’s Menü war unwiderstehlich und lokal beschafft werden. Ich war beeindruckt, dass Linda und so viele andere traf ich während unseres Besuchs VT sind so “vom Bauernhof bis auf den Tisch” leidenschaftlich. Der Ahorn-cured Speck und Käse serviert sie waren Geschmack ich noch lange in Erinnerung bleiben.

Ich bin zur Euro Preise für Unterkünfte und bin erstaunt, wie günstig die meisten amerikanischen hotel preise sind. Aber wenn ich vergleichen, was Wir verbrachten in Hotels während unserer Reise, die Kosten in Made INN Vermont, und alle Annehmlichkeiten, die Sie für den Preis ist es ein Schnäppchen und ein Speicher kann ich wärmstens empfehlen!

HOLLA AT OUR HOLLANDAISE | MIV GOURMET BREAKFAST

Roll out of bed, throw on some jammies and stuff your feet into some cozy slippers, it’s breakfast time at Burlington, Vermont’s best bed and breakfast. We would not be the top historic inn without offering a golden toasted muffin topped with an ooey-gooey, runny yolked poached egg and your choice of smoked salmon, avocado or maple bacon smothered in a lemony hollandaise… AKA Eggs Benedict. And if at this moment you’re thinking, “no way can I make Hollandaise. I don’t have the stamina to whisk egg yolks with hot, foamy butter until it thickens to a rib-coating consistency”, you’re wrong. You can make Hollandaise. It’s so f*cking easy.

Here’s what you’ll need to make our tried and true Eggs Benedict Hollandaise to WOW your family and friends:

Place the butter in a small pan over medium heat. Melt until the butter begins to foam. Remove from heat and set aside. Crack the eggs and separate the yolks from the whites. Place all yolks into the blender or food processor. Add 1-2 TBSP of lemon juice depending on how tangy you want the Hollandaise. Add a pinch of salt. Blend for 5 seconds. Here’s where you need a little coordination, but don’t lose your sh!t, it’s still super easy. You can either pour your melted butter into a measuring cup with a spout or place your pot of melted butter right next to the blender or food processor and use a spoon. Either way, keep your butter close by. Turn on the blender or food processor and begin slow adding the butter to the yolks in a very thin stream. If you are using a measuring cup, pour the butter in very slowly while yolks are blending to create an emulsion. If you pour the butter in too fast the sauce will break or the yolks will scramble. If you are using a spoon, work spoonful by spoonful, slowly incorporating the butter into the yolks in a thin stream. Continue blending until all of the butter has been added. Ta-da! A creamy and lemony Hollandaise that will leave your friends and family licking their plates…and you didn’t even have to break out the whisk.

THE MORNING OF OUR SPECIAL “SMOKED” BREAKFAST

Our marketing guy suggests we promote ourselves as Made INN Vermont Bed & Breakfast (terror included at no extra charge).

This is what happened the other morning. We have a commercial grade, stainless steel kitchen, which is virtually fireproof. However, someone (possibly me, before the first cup of coffee kicked in), placed a wooden cutting board too close to a stove burner. The board began to smolder, and we now know that all of our smoke alarms work perfectly.

All of our guests abandoned their comfortable Tempurpedic beds, quickly donned the plush robes and slippers we provide in each guest room, and fled their elegantly appointed rooms. Most of them looked way better than I do at that hour of the morning (some mornings, I think I look like I’ve been thrown off a moving train). I didn’t even have a chance to inform them that any of state of undress is permitted in Vermont. Yes, it is a fact that VT is the only state that permits public nudity, except in city parks (apparently nudity upsets squirrels). In fact, our attractive male guests didn’t even give me a vote on their choice of attire.

Of course there was no real danger and not even our fabulous vinyl record collection was in jeopardy, but the atmosphere was ruined. I covered the cost of breakfast for each guest at any of our outstanding local restaurants. In order to steady their nerves a few guests may have partaken of one of the award-winning IPAs, sangrias, or mimosas we serve, and all’s well that ends well.

Unfortunately, that morning our guests didn’t have a chance to enjoy our amazing maple-cured bacon. That morning, it had an extra special smoky flavor.

We’ve learned our lesson and we work hard to not repeat our mistakes, so no worries. We promise an impromptu fire drill will not be part of your stay at Made INN Vermont.

Greetings past and future guests! Welcome to my first blog, where I’ll periodically report about goings on at the INN, or special events you may wish to know about during your planned visit.

It has been a busy year. After one of the “worst” winters in recent history (skiers and snowboarders loved it; here, we felt blessed to not have as much white stuff as Boston endured). Following the wettest May ever, and June not much of an improvement, July has finally brought us some lovely summer days and the promise of many more. Not only do we have no drought worries in Vermont, all this makes for a spectacular fall foliage season – the time of the year when we Vermonters affectionately welcome thousands of “leaf peepers” (bring your cameras, it’s quite spectacular, and you’ll want to book early for the fall season).

If you’ve stayed with us before, then you’ll remember our sweet inn kitties, both 19 years old. Following a stroke that he didn’t recover from well, we had to send dear Casey Boy to the “Rainbow Bridge” in March. We miss him terribly and he’s pictured on our Policies/Pets page. His sister Cutie Catie is still with us and as much of a love as always. (Note: Many of our previous guests have pet allergies and have been unaffected. Catie never ventures beyond my office, the downstairs parlor, or the garden – she’s never upstairs, nor does she enter guestrooms. And we clean here constantly!) You may also want to note that we are the only B&B in the region that welcomes well-mannered dogs (please discuss with me by phone at the time of your reservation. We can provide bedding, bowls, treats…whatever your pooch needs.)

In June, we hosted an early evening YELP event for the urban artist David Hinnebusch (you can see his art at www.fakeart.net) and his work is displayed throughout the inn this summer (thank you David; and Heidi from YELP). Our inn is known for its fascinating collection of fun, hip art, collectibles and memorabilia and David’s art is an appreciated, vibrant addition.

Brag warning: In addition to our previous awards, listed on our home page, earlier this year Yankee Magazine named US Editor’s Choice: Best New Bed & Breakfast . You past guests and your reviews, especially at TripAdvisor.com and Google, have helped us succeed, and we’re grateful for that. I also must thank my staff who make this labor-of-love possible and a memorable experience for our guests: the indispensable, all-around fix-it/maintenance guy, T.J.; Chef Janna for her mouth-watering breakfasts; extremely detailed and fanatic housekeepers Anna (who worked spring and early summer), and now the ever-patient Kyle; and my quasi-assistant, Jim, who mostly works from home, where he can nap after my barrage of 25 phone calls and 50 email messages per day (if you’ve seen the film The Devil Wears Prada, he claims I’m the Meryl Streep, and he’s the Anne Hathaway character; and it’s his beautiful, deaf, rescued Great Dane pictured on our Policies/Pets page).
